{"id":7972,"date":"2020-04-13T16:25:07","date_gmt":"2020-04-13T16:25:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dfcme.me\/dfc-finds-out-a-botnet-arrived-in-serbia-along-with-coronavirus\/"},"modified":"2022-10-22T20:10:06","modified_gmt":"2022-10-22T18:10:06","slug":"dfc-finds-out-a-botnet-arrived-in-serbia-along-with-coronavirus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dfc.me\/en\/dfc-finds-out-a-botnet-arrived-in-serbia-along-with-coronavirus\/","title":{"rendered":"A bot network arrived in Serbia along with coronavirus"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-ugb-spacer ugb-spacer ugb-e28afd5 ugb-spacer--v2 ugb-main-block\" id=\"\"><style>.ugb-e28afd5.ugb-spacer{height:15px}<\/style><div class=\"ugb-inner-block\"><div class=\"ugb-block-content\"><div class=\"ugb-spacer--inner\"><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Analyzing posts on Twitter for the period from <strong><span style=\"color: #2d5c88;\" class=\"ugb-highlight\">March 9 to April 9<\/span><\/strong>, we discovered <strong><span style=\"color: #2d5c88;\" class=\"ugb-highlight\">30,000<\/span><\/strong> tweets coming from accounts in Serbia with keywords Kina (China) and Srbija (Serbia) in their content. As much as <span style=\"color: #2d5c88;\" class=\"ugb-highlight\"><strong>71.9 <\/strong><\/span>percent of the content was produced by \u201cbot\u201c accounts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A huge pro-government network of \u201cbot\u201c accounts wrote and praised the Chinese aid and the friendship between the two countries, amplifying the visibility of tweets by retweeting. The analysis shows the approach, tactics and reach of the campaign. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1030\" height=\"541\" src=\"https:\/\/dfcme.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Vucicevi-botovi-po-bulletima-eng-01-1030x541.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7976\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dfc.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Vucicevi-botovi-po-bulletima-eng-01-1030x541.jpg 1030w, https:\/\/dfc.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Vucicevi-botovi-po-bulletima-eng-01-300x158.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1030px) 100vw, 1030px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"beijing-dearer-than-brussels\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ffffff; background-color: #2d5c88;\" class=\"ugb-highlight\">Beijing dearer than Brussels\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-ugb-spacer ugb-spacer ugb-1bc4549 ugb-spacer--v2 ugb-main-block\" id=\"\"><style>.ugb-1bc4549.ugb-spacer{height:10px}.ugb-1bc4549 .ugb-spacer--inner{background-color:#ffffff !important}.ugb-1bc4549 .ugb-spacer--inner:before{background-color:#ffffff !important}<\/style><div class=\"ugb-inner-block\"><div class=\"ugb-block-content\"><div class=\"ugb-spacer--inner\"><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Even though <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TwitterSafety\/status\/1245682441865646080?s=09\"><strong><span style=\"color: #2d5c88;\" class=\"ugb-highlight\">Twitter announced recently<\/span><\/strong><\/a><strong><span style=\"color: #2d5c88;\" class=\"ugb-highlight\"> <\/span><\/strong>that it removed several thousand accounts from the network, mostly serving to promote Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic and his political party, the Digital Forensic Center&#8217;s analysis shows that the botnet is still active in Serbia \u2013 this time it promotes the Chinese aid to the country during the coronavirus epidemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many times, during the epidemic, Vucic has praised the aid from China and Russia, while criticizing the European Union. Thus, he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/B9zskcOhl1o\/\"><strong><span style=\"color: #2d5c88;\" class=\"ugb-highlight\">stated<\/span><\/strong><\/a> that he believes in his brother and friend Xi Jinping, adding that China is the only country that can help them. After China <a href=\"https:\/\/www.slobodnaevropa.org\/a\/30501473.html\"><span style=\"color: #2d5c88;\" class=\"ugb-highlight\"><strong>had sent<\/strong><\/span><\/a> its aid consisting of experts and medical equipment to Serbia, the <a href=\"https:\/\/informer.rs\/vesti\/drustvo\/504745\/celicno-prijateljstvo-sva-vremena-hvala-kini-bilborda-video\"><strong><span style=\"color: #2d5c88;\" class=\"ugb-highlight\">billboards<\/span><\/strong><\/a> of gratitude followed, displayed by the Serbian tabloid Informer on its own-initiative at several locations in Belgrade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the other hand, Vucic has strongly attacked the EU and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=b9I3eiID7wc\"><strong><span style=\"color: #2d5c88;\" class=\"ugb-highlight\">said<\/span><\/strong><\/a> that the European solidarity does not exist and that it is all a fairy tale on a sheet of paper. The similar opinion shared Serbian Minister of Foreign Affairs Ivica Dacic, who said that China can help them at the moment, while the donations of the European union are reflected only in a flight bringing aid from India. This \u201eonly\u201c <a href=\"https:\/\/www.slobodnaevropa.org\/a\/30521998.html\"><strong><span style=\"color: #2d5c88;\" class=\"ugb-highlight\">accounts for<\/span><\/strong><\/a> EUR 7.2 million for cargo-only flights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Brussels reallocated about EUR340 million in non-refundable aid <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/commission\/presscorner\/detail\/en\/ip_20_561\"><strong><span style=\"color: #2d5c88;\" class=\"ugb-highlight\">for the Western Balkan countries<\/span><\/strong><\/a>, the most of which will go to Serbia \u2013 15 million in immediate support to healthcare sector and 78.4 million to mitigate the coronavirus impacts. Besides, the EU supports constantly the healthcare sector in Serbia. Since 2000, the Union <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/FabriziSem\/status\/1242056812725260288\"><strong><span style=\"color: #2d5c88;\" class=\"ugb-highlight\">has provided<\/span><\/strong><\/a> EUR450 million in grants and the EIB loans for hospitals all around Serbia, the Torlak Institute, ambulances equipped with respirators, and virus testing equipment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite the EU&#8217;s aid, Twitter shows an active campaign aiming at promoting the Chinese aid and creating false perception among other users. <\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"a-network-of-bot-accounts\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ffffff; background-color: #2d5c88;\" class=\"ugb-highlight\">A network of \u201cbot\u201d accounts<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-ugb-spacer ugb-spacer ugb-784dc27 ugb-spacer--v2 ugb-main-block\" id=\"\"><style>.ugb-784dc27.ugb-spacer{height:10px}<\/style><div class=\"ugb-inner-block\"><div class=\"ugb-block-content\"><div class=\"ugb-spacer--inner\"><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>A detailed analysis of <strong><span style=\"color: #2d5c88;\" class=\"ugb-highlight\">30,000<\/span><\/strong> tweets showed that <strong><span style=\"color: #2d5c88;\" class=\"ugb-highlight\">21,572<\/span><\/strong> of them (<span style=\"color: #2d5c88;\" class=\"ugb-highlight\"><strong>71.9 percent)<\/strong><\/span> were produced by \u201cbot\u201d accounts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unique <strong><span style=\"color: #2d5c88;\" class=\"ugb-highlight\">1,124<\/span><\/strong> \u201cbot\u201d accounts were identified in the analyzed content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Analyzing content, it can be seen that the primary task of this large network of accounts was to praise the Serbian-Chinese friendship, as well as the significance of the Chinese aid during the coronavirus epidemic. On the other hand, the content criticizing the EU and its alleged lack of help was also present. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While some accounts were created as early as <strong><span style=\"color: #2d5c88;\" class=\"ugb-highlight\">2009<\/span><\/strong>, the analyzed botnet has begun to grow in <span style=\"color: #2d5c88;\" class=\"ugb-highlight\"><strong>2018<\/strong><\/span>, when the \u201eOne in five million\u201c protests were being organized all over the country, it continued to grow in <span style=\"color: #2d5c88;\" class=\"ugb-highlight\"><strong>2019<\/strong><\/span>, and saw its first expansion in the first quarter of <strong><span style=\"color: #2d5c88;\" class=\"ugb-highlight\">2020<\/span><\/strong>, when <strong><span style=\"color: #2d5c88;\" class=\"ugb-highlight\">954<\/span><\/strong> accounts were created.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/dfcme.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/rast-tokom-godina.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1030\" height=\"589\" src=\"https:\/\/dfcme.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/rast-tokom-godina-1030x589.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7919\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dfc.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/rast-tokom-godina-1030x589.png 1030w, https:\/\/dfc.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/rast-tokom-godina-300x172.png 300w, https:\/\/dfc.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/rast-tokom-godina.png 1136w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1030px) 100vw, 1030px\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Overview of the network\u2019s growth from 2009 to 2020 <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/dfcme.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/2020-mjeseci.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1030\" height=\"347\" src=\"https:\/\/dfcme.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/2020-mjeseci-1030x347.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7921\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dfc.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/2020-mjeseci-1030x347.png 1030w, https:\/\/dfc.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/2020-mjeseci-300x101.png 300w, https:\/\/dfc.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/2020-mjeseci.png 1100w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1030px) 100vw, 1030px\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Overview of bot accounts created in the first quarter of 2020<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>For the given period, the analyzed \u201cbot\u201d accounts had <strong><span style=\"color: #2d5c88;\" class=\"ugb-highlight\">186,584<\/span><\/strong> followers in total, or <span style=\"color: #2d5c88;\" class=\"ugb-highlight\"><strong>166<\/strong><\/span> followers per account on average.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Out of all <strong><span style=\"color: #2d5c88;\" class=\"ugb-highlight\">21, 572<\/span><\/strong> \u201cbot\u201d account tweets, <strong><span style=\"color: #2d5c88;\" class=\"ugb-highlight\">18,422<\/span><\/strong> or <span style=\"color: #2d5c88;\" class=\"ugb-highlight\"><strong>85.4<\/strong><\/span> per cent were retweets, which is one of the key characteristics of such accounts and networks. This shows that their goal was to amplify the reach of the existing content, and not to create the new and original one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Within the frame of the analyzed sample, the two accounts with the largest number of tweets concerning the topic of China and Serbia were: <strong><span style=\"color: #2d5c88;\" class=\"ugb-highlight\">@opancina_nevena<\/span><\/strong> with <span style=\"color: #2d5c88;\" class=\"ugb-highlight\"><strong>135 <\/strong><\/span>tweets and <span style=\"color: #2d5c88;\" class=\"ugb-highlight\"><strong>@UDrskNYdBGfZzpA<\/strong><\/span>&nbsp;with <span style=\"color: #2d5c88;\" class=\"ugb-highlight\"><strong>138<\/strong><\/span> tweets, and all <span style=\"color: #2d5c88;\" class=\"ugb-highlight\"><strong>273<\/strong><\/span> of them were retweets. Hence, there was no original content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/dfcme.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/kolaz.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"666\" src=\"https:\/\/dfcme.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/kolaz.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7923\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dfc.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/kolaz.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/dfc.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/kolaz-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Some of the most frequent posts in this network of accounts<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Out of <strong><span style=\"color: #2d5c88;\" class=\"ugb-highlight\">3,150 <\/span><\/strong>original tweets, <strong><span style=\"color: #2d5c88;\" class=\"ugb-highlight\">1,134 <\/span><\/strong>tweets (<strong><span style=\"color: #2d5c88;\" class=\"ugb-highlight\">36 percent<\/span><\/strong>) did not show engagement (likes or retweets), while the average of engagement is <strong><span style=\"color: #2d5c88;\" class=\"ugb-highlight\">7,79<\/span><\/strong> per tweet.<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"narratives\"><strong><span class=\"ugb-highlight\" style=\"color: #ffffff; background-color: #2d5c88;\">Narratives<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-ugb-spacer ugb-spacer ugb-5315f20 ugb-spacer--v2 ugb-main-block\" id=\"\"><style>.ugb-5315f20.ugb-spacer{height:10px}<\/style><div class=\"ugb-inner-block\"><div class=\"ugb-block-content\"><div class=\"ugb-spacer--inner\"><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The analysis demonstrates that the content (tweets) can be grouped into three categories, in accordance with the narratives that they spread:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong><span style=\"color: #2d5c88;\" class=\"ugb-highlight\">Praising the Chinese aid and friendship between China and Serbia<\/span><\/strong><\/li><li><strong><span style=\"color: #2d5c88;\" class=\"ugb-highlight\">Praising the President and Government of Serbia for great steps in this case<\/span><\/strong><\/li><li><strong><span style=\"color: #2d5c88;\" class=\"ugb-highlight\">Lack of help from the EU<\/span><\/strong><\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Generally speaking, the accounts were continuously praising Vucic, Serbian Government and China \u2013 by retweeting and responding with positive messages to the content in connection to them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of the opinions is that China was in a difficult situation but it fought it out successfully, therefore, it is aware of the difficulties that Serbia is facing. Thankfulness for honest friendship is expressed in the tweets, while the focus is on the efforts of \u201ctwo fraternal nations that will defeat epidemic together \u201c.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, it is emphasized that President Vucic strengthened the position of Serbia in the world with his politics and that is why Russia and China are also helping Serbia. It is also indicated that the members of the Chinese administration were pleasantly surprised with concrete actions and measures that the Serbian Government took during the spreading of the dangerous disease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The EU is also criticized, i.e. the alleged lack of its help. Accounts <strong><span style=\"color: #2d5c88;\" class=\"ugb-highlight\">@avucic<\/span><\/strong>, <span style=\"color: #2d5c88;\" class=\"ugb-highlight\"><strong>@AmbChenBo<\/strong><\/span> (Chinese Ambassador to Serbia) and <strong><span style=\"color: #2d5c88;\" class=\"ugb-highlight\">@anabrnabic<\/span><\/strong> (Serbian PM) were mentioned in <strong><span style=\"color: #2d5c88;\" class=\"ugb-highlight\">11,346<\/span><\/strong>, <span style=\"color: #2d5c88;\" class=\"ugb-highlight\"><strong>460<\/strong><\/span>, and <span style=\"color: #2d5c88;\" class=\"ugb-highlight\"><strong>270<\/strong><\/span> tweets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/dfcme.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/@-tviter.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1030\" height=\"289\" src=\"https:\/\/dfcme.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/@-tviter-1030x289.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7928\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dfc.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/@-tviter-1030x289.png 1030w, https:\/\/dfc.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/@-tviter-300x84.png 300w, https:\/\/dfc.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/@-tviter.png 1072w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1030px) 100vw, 1030px\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Accounts @avucic, @AmbChenBo and @anabrnabic were mentioned in 11,346; 460, and 270 posts.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The accounts did not only mention Vucic @avucic (and other accounts in connection with this one) but they also \u201cpumped\u201d the hashtags <strong><span style=\"color: #2d5c88;\" class=\"ugb-highlight\">#vu\u010di\u0107, #brzejacebolje (#fasterbetterstronger), #celicnoprijateljstvo (#ironfriendship), #srbija<\/span><\/strong> and <span style=\"color: #2d5c88;\" class=\"ugb-highlight\"><strong>#kina<\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/dfcme.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/tviter.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1030\" height=\"289\" src=\"https:\/\/dfcme.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/tviter-1030x289.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7930\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dfc.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/tviter-1030x289.png 1030w, https:\/\/dfc.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/tviter-300x84.png 300w, https:\/\/dfc.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/tviter.png 1072w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1030px) 100vw, 1030px\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Three trending hashtags: #srbija was present in 14,388 tweets, #vucic in 13,057 and #kina in 4,909 tweets.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Another noted activity was the promotion of the content coming from different addresses, close to Serbian authorities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Therefore, the Instagram profile of President Vucic, his official site <strong><span style=\"color: #2d5c88;\" class=\"ugb-highlight\">www.vucic.rs<\/span><\/strong>, the pro-government <em><strong><span style=\"color: #2d5c88;\" class=\"ugb-highlight\">Informer<\/span><\/strong><\/em><strong><span style=\"color: #2d5c88;\" class=\"ugb-highlight\">,&nbsp;<\/span><\/strong><em><strong><span style=\"color: #2d5c88;\" class=\"ugb-highlight\">Kurir<\/span><\/strong>&nbsp;<\/em>tabloids and&nbsp;<em><strong><span style=\"color: #2d5c88;\" class=\"ugb-highlight\">TV Pink<\/span><\/strong><\/em><strong><span style=\"color: #2d5c88;\" class=\"ugb-highlight\"> <\/span><\/strong>were the external sources that the bots usually made reference to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/dfcme.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/mediji-2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1030\" height=\"403\" src=\"https:\/\/dfcme.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/mediji-2-1030x403.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7932\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dfc.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/mediji-2-1030x403.png 1030w, https:\/\/dfc.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/mediji-2-300x117.png 300w, https:\/\/dfc.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/mediji-2.png 1076w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1030px) 100vw, 1030px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"conclusion\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ffffff; background-color: #2d5c88;\" class=\"ugb-highlight\">Conclusion<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-ugb-spacer ugb-spacer ugb-0167668 ugb-spacer--v2 ugb-main-block\" id=\"\"><style>.ugb-0167668.ugb-spacer{height:10px}<\/style><div class=\"ugb-inner-block\"><div class=\"ugb-block-content\"><div class=\"ugb-spacer--inner\"><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>By analyzing data from <strong><span style=\"color: #2d5c88;\" class=\"ugb-highlight\">30,000<\/span><\/strong> accounts referring only to China and its aid to Serbia during last month, we are concluding that the activities of the \u201cbot\u201d accounts are still present in that country, which was also detected by Twitter.
