However, Facebook is the most used when it comes to the election campaigns, thanks to its features and tools. It offers a feature to collect numerous data easily, which enables the targeting of the groups on the basis of different criteria (users&#8217; preferences, location etc.) This way, the users susceptible to a particular content are easily identified.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><p>Examples of the political influence on social media are numerous. During 2019, President Donald Trump spent almost 20 million dollars on ads on Facebook. Russian meddling in the USA elections in 2016 is also problematic. On that occasion, Russian hackers allegedly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/tech\/annals-of-technology\/the-problem-of-political-advertising-on-social-media\" data-mce-href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/tech\/annals-of-technology\/the-problem-of-political-advertising-on-social-media\">meddled<\/a> by launching misleading and false Facebook ads, intended for the users in the USA.<\/p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/petersuciu\/2020\/02\/12\/will-political-social-media-influencers-impact-this-years-election\/#3111068a6fc0\" data-mce-href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/petersuciu\/2020\/02\/12\/will-political-social-media-influencers-impact-this-years-election\/#3111068a6fc0\">Influencers<\/a> also have an important role in the election campaigns. What is indicative is the fact that not only influencers with many followers are engaged in the propaganda of political parties on social media or inviting people to participate in the elections, but also the so-called <em>micro-influencers<\/em> with only a couple of thousands of followers.<\/p><\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"where-are-our-political-parties-on-facebook\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ffffff; background-color: #2d5c88;\" class=\"ugb-highlight\">Where are our political parties on Facebook?<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n<p>According to the<span style=\"color: #2d5c88;\" class=\"ugb-highlight\"> <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aa.com.tr\/ba\/politika\/lideri-u-regionu-po-broju-politi%C4%8Dara-u-crnoj-gori-registrovana-51-politi%C4%8Dka-partija\/1603118\"><strong><span style=\"color: #2d5c88;\" class=\"ugb-highlight\">data<\/span><\/strong><\/a> from 2019, Montenegro has 51 political parties, the most per capita in the region. However, in the race for parliamentary elections scheduled for August 30, 2020, there are about a dozen of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since the coronavirus pandemic made the campaign in real word difficult, some parties decided to use the virtual world (social media) for this purpose. In Montenegro, it is usually<strong><span style=\"color: #2d5c88;\" class=\"ugb-highlight\"> <\/span><\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/datareportal.com\/reports\/digital-2020-montenegro\"><strong><span style=\"color: #2d5c88;\" class=\"ugb-highlight\">Facebook<\/span><\/strong><\/a>, as the most used social network.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1030\" height=\"687\" src=\"https:\/\/dfcme.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/kon-karampelas-HUBofEFQ6CA-unsplash-1030x687.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8757\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dfc.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/kon-karampelas-HUBofEFQ6CA-unsplash-1030x687.jpg 1030w, https:\/\/dfc.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/kon-karampelas-HUBofEFQ6CA-unsplash-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1030px) 100vw, 1030px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The DFC analyzed eleven Facebook pages of the Montenegrin political parties during the period June \u2013 July 2020: Aleksa Be\u010di\u0107 \u2013 Demokrate \u2013 Demokratska Crna Gora, Gra\u0111anski pokret URA, Demokratska partija socijalista Crne Gore, Ujedinjena Crna Gora \u2013 Zvani\u010dna stranica, DEMOS \u2013 Miodrag Leki\u0107, Socijaldemokrate Crne Gore, Marko Mila\u010di\u0107 \u2013 Prava Crna Gora, Demokratski front, SNP \u2013 Socijalisti\u010dka narodna partija Crne Gore \u2013 \u0421\u041d\u041f \u0426\u0413, Socijaldemokratska partija Crne Gore \u2013 SDP) and Bo\u0161nja\u010dka stranka.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The acquired data indicate which political parties had the most interactions per post (total number of likes, shares, and comments), the most likes on the page as well as whether the interaction has varied as the elections are approaching. It was noticed that particular political parties used the option of sponsoring in order to amplify their reach, which collides with the <em>organic<\/em> interactions on these pages.<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"milacics-page-the-most-interactions-and-likes\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ffffff; background-color: #2d5c88;\" class=\"ugb-highlight\">Milacic&#8217;s page\u00a0 \u2013 the most interactions and likes<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n<p>The page of Marko Milacic \u2013 Prava Crna Gora had the most interactions per post (4.3k) in June. This page also generates the most likes (70.1k). The next are the pages Demokratski front with 1.5k and Aleksa Be\u010di\u0107 \u2013 Demokrate \u2013 Demokratska Crna Gora with 1.1k of interactions per post. Besides this, both pages obtained many likes; therefore, the page of the DF has 51.3k while the Democrats have 44.4k of likes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/dfcme.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/P-partije-jun-interakcije.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1030\" height=\"626\" src=\"https:\/\/dfcme.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/P-partije-jun-interakcije-1030x626.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8786\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dfc.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/P-partije-jun-interakcije-1030x626.jpg 1030w, https:\/\/dfc.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/P-partije-jun-interakcije-300x182.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1030px) 100vw, 1030px\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Number of average interactions per post in June on the pages of political parties<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Other pages of political parties have less than a thousand interactions per post in June. However, Ujedinjena Crna Gora \u2013 Zvani\u010dna stranica stands out in this group and despite the lower number of likes (5.8k) generates 717 interactions per post.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In July, Milacic&#8217;s page still had the most interactions per post (3.4.k) while this figure is almost halved in the case of Demokratski Front and Demokrate accounting for 757 and 643 interactions per post respectively. The data indicates that not all pages of political parties generate a significant increase in the number of interactions per post, even though the elections are approaching. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/dfcme.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/P-partije-jul-interakcije-1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1030\" height=\"615\" src=\"https:\/\/dfcme.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/P-partije-jul-interakcije-1-1030x615.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8788\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dfc.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/P-partije-jul-interakcije-1-1030x615.jpg 1030w, https:\/\/dfc.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/P-partije-jul-interakcije-1-300x179.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1030px) 100vw, 1030px\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Number of average interactions per post in July on the pages of political parties<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The pages of other political parties generate a similar trend in July as it was the case with June. Therefore, the number of interactions per post still does not surpass a thousand. However, a significant increase in the number of interactions is noticeable on the page of the Social democrats of Montenegro, which bounced from 70 in June to 369 interactions per post in July.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/dfcme.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/P-partije-jun-jul-lajkovi-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1030\" height=\"625\" src=\"https:\/\/dfcme.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/P-partije-jun-jul-lajkovi-2-1030x625.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8790\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dfc.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/P-partije-jun-jul-lajkovi-2-1030x625.jpg 1030w, https:\/\/dfc.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/P-partije-jun-jul-lajkovi-2-300x182.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1030px) 100vw, 1030px\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Overview of the growth in number of likes for June &#8211; July<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>When it comes to page likes, the biggest growth for the period June-July is registered on the Marko Milacic \u2013 Prava Crna Gora Facebook page with 6.7k likes, as well as on the Aleksa Becic \u2013 Demokrate \u2013 Demokratska Crna Gora with 6.1k likes. This is followed by Demokratski front (3.2k), Socijaldemokrate Crne Gore (1.8k), Demokratska partija socijalista Crne Gore (1.5k) and Ujedinjena Crna Gora \u2013 Zvanicna stranica (1.4k). Other pages of the political parties generate the growth of a less than a thousand page likes for the two monitored months. <\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"meme-pages-joined-the-political-game\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ffffff; background-color: #2d5c88;\" class=\"ugb-highlight\">Meme pages joined the political game<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n<p>Apart from being fun, meme pages popular on Facebook use their rhetoric to influence public opinion. With a characteristic dose of satire, they have frequently been used as a tool of influence, which is most visible at the key political moments \u2013 in this case, the election campaign in Montenegro. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Otavio Freire, chief technology officer and president of SafeGuard Cyber, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/2019\/sep\/12\/why-instagram-could-be-a-major-site-for-disinformation-in-the-2020-election\">told<\/a> for The Guardian last year: <em>The visual nature of content makes it easier to stoke discord by speaking to audiences\u2019 beliefs through memes. This content is easy and inexpensive to produce but more difficult to factcheck than articles from dubious sites.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1030\" height=\"603\" src=\"https:\/\/dfcme.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/meme.-jpg-1030x603.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8774\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dfc.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/meme.-jpg-1030x603.jpg 1030w, https:\/\/dfc.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/meme.-jpg-300x176.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1030px) 100vw, 1030px\" \/><figcaption>Meme pages achieve the growth in Montenegro<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Meme pages, divided between the position and the opposition just like the domestic political scene, find sources of their content in the current political reality, interpreting it in different manners. It is presumed that some of them have been created by political parties themselves, while others are obviously supporting specific political parties and even the Metropolitanate of Montenegro and the Littoral in the context of the elections. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That way, the politics have been transferred to the virtual world, and in that sense, several opposition-oriented meme pages come to the fore: \u041c\u0418\u041c\u0438\u0441\u0442\u0430\u0440\u0441\u0442\u0432\u043e \u043e\u043d\u043e\u0441\u0442\u0440\u0430\u043d\u0438\u0445 \u043f\u043e\u0441\u043b\u043e\u0432\u0430, Nemojmo politizovati proteste, It was very unpleasant\/Psalam 118 (which call themselves <em>meme serdars<\/em>), Dnevna doza crnogorskih dubioza, including two position-close meme pages \u2013 Crna Gora Transparentno and Politika Crna Gora.<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"figures-and-statistics\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ffffff; background-color: #2d5c88;\" class=\"ugb-highlight\">Figures and statistics<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n<p>In the context of the upcoming elections, it was noticed that the opposition-oriented meme pages have had a larger number of posts on a daily basis. Just meme page It was very unpleasant\/Psalam 118 had 28 posts per day on average for the period June-July. &nbsp;Also, by random <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/permalink.php?story_fbid=2002232083270567&amp;id=1085970928230025\">sharing<\/a>, they amplify the content from other meme pages with similar views. On the other hand, pages close to the government account for a smaller number of posts \u2013 several posts on a weekly or monthly basis, but some of their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/cgtransparentno\/photos\/a.576270659172963\/1943645815768767\/\"><strong><span style=\"color: #2d5c88;\" class=\"ugb-highlight\">posts<\/span><\/strong><\/a> have more than a thousand likes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/dfcme.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Mim-stranice-jun-jul-lajkovi.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1030\" height=\"370\" src=\"https:\/\/dfcme.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Mim-stranice-jun-jul-lajkovi-1030x370.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8777\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dfc.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Mim-stranice-jun-jul-lajkovi-1030x370.jpg 1030w, https:\/\/dfc.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Mim-stranice-jun-jul-lajkovi-300x108.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1030px) 100vw, 1030px\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Growth in number of likes on the meme pages for June &#8211; July<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The analyzed data clearly shows us that depending on the political option they are more inclined to, some meme pages criticize the opposition and their leaders. Others, on the other hand, call for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/desnarukaAmfilohija\/photos\/a.102547681297452\/180356416849911\/\"><strong><span style=\"color: #2d5c88;\" class=\"ugb-highlight\">opposition unity<\/span><\/strong><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/permalink.php?story_fbid=2006129929547449&amp;id=1085970928230025\"><strong><span style=\"color: #2d5c88;\" class=\"ugb-highlight\">insist<\/span><\/strong><\/a> on voting instead of election boycott, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/politizovanje\/photos\/a.212473956348397\/613511666244622\/\"><strong><span style=\"color: #2d5c88;\" class=\"ugb-highlight\">criticize<\/span><\/strong><\/a> the ruling party \u2013 the DPS, and the President of Montenegro. The SPC and the Metropolitanate of Montenegro and the Littoral is also a frequent topic of the meme pages; some of them express their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/permalink.php?story_fbid=1972902229536886&amp;id=1085970928230025\"><strong><span style=\"color: #2d5c88;\" class=\"ugb-highlight\">support<\/span><\/strong><\/a> to Metropolitan Amfilohije. Sometimes, admins of such pages see themselves as persons whose <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/permalink.php?story_fbid=1994320284061747&amp;id=1085970928230025\"><strong><span style=\"color: #2d5c88;\" class=\"ugb-highlight\">strategies<\/span><\/strong><\/a> should be followed by the church to overthrow the government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/dfcme.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Mim-stranice-jun-jul-interakcije.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1030\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/dfcme.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Mim-stranice-jun-jul-interakcije-1030x375.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8781\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dfc.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Mim-stranice-jun-jul-interakcije-1030x375.jpg 1030w, https:\/\/dfc.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Mim-stranice-jun-jul-interakcije-300x109.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1030px) 100vw, 1030px\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Average number of interaction per post on the meme pages for June &#8211; July<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>When it comes to the statistics for June-July 2020, despite its small number of posts (18) for the past two months, meme page Crna Gora Transparentno has the largest number of average interactions per post (914), at the same time being the most liked meme page (18.9k).
