{"id":9591,"date":"2020-10-23T20:51:00","date_gmt":"2020-10-23T20:51:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dfcme.me\/how-the-serbian-media-are-pitting-the-people-against-the-army\/"},"modified":"2022-10-22T18:40:10","modified_gmt":"2022-10-22T16:40:10","slug":"how-the-serbian-media-are-pitting-the-people-against-the-army","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dfc.me\/en\/how-the-serbian-media-are-pitting-the-people-against-the-army\/","title":{"rendered":"How the Serbian media are pitting the people against the Army"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A planned five-day exercise on Sinjajevina Mountain that was envisaged for the period from October 19 to October 23 was followed by sensational and tendentious content in the Serbian tabloids.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In accordance with its activities, the Army of Montenegro announced on October 14 that the military exercise would be held on the Montenegrin Sinjajevina Mountain in the period from October 19 to October 23. At the same time, the part of the public discussed the potential threats to the environment that may be caused by 82mm and 120mm mortar shooting. In a <a href=\"https:\/\/mod.gov.me\/vijesti\/234631\/Poziv-zainteresovanim-NVO-iz-oblasti-zastite-zivotne-sredine-da-prisustvuju-vjezbi-na-Sinjajevini.html\"><strong><span style=\"color: #2d5c88;\" class=\"ugb-highlight\">press release<\/span><\/strong><\/a> published earlier by the Ministry of Defense, it was stated that all the media and NGOs engaged in environmental protection were invited to participate in the exercise on October 22.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Soon after the news on the military exercise had been published, numerous eco-activists, NGO representatives, and above all the members of the civic initiative <em>Sa\u010duvajmo Sinjajevinu<\/em> (S<em>ave Sinjajevina) <\/em>started a peaceful protest that included camping on the military exercise site. A part of the activists, <em>green<\/em> organizations representatives, and locals arrived on the mountain on October 16, and in the moment of writing, they are still there. The road blockage was another way to express dissatisfaction with the announced military exercise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the other hand, Minister of Defense Predrag Boskovic<strong><span style=\"color: #2d5c88;\" class=\"ugb-highlight\"> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rtcg.me\/vijesti\/drustvo\/296530\/sinjajevini-vise-stete-protesti-nego-vojska.html\">emphasized<\/a><\/span><\/strong> that <em>all relevant studies in Montenegro and the region confirmed that this type of exercise with such armament and munitions could not aggravate or complicate any ecological situation on the site<\/em>. However, after the pressure of the public and media, the Ministry of Defense announced on October 21 that the exercise <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rtcg.me\/vijesti\/drustvo\/296680\/nema-uslova-za-vjezbu-na-sinjajevini.html\"><strong><span style=\"color: #2d5c88;\" class=\"ugb-highlight\">was postponed<\/span><\/strong><\/a> until further notice.<\/p>\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"waves-of-sensational-and-sappy-headlines-on-the-news-portals\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ffffff;background-color: #2d5c88\" class=\"ugb-highlight\">Waves of sensational and sappy headlines on the news portals<\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n<p>A piece of news on the military exercise ended up on the main headlines of the Serbian news portals that were competing in the number of articles and sensational headlines. Even though the texts usually reported the facts and statements of the Montenegrin activists or officials, clickbait headlines suggested a state of war tensions on Sinjajevina Mountain: <em>RANTING AND RAVING! War for Sinjajevina is continuing, the armies of Montenegro and NATO cannot take over the Mountain (VIDEO) (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.srbijadanas.com\/vesti\/region\/digla-se-kuka-i-motika-rat-za-sinjajevinu-se-nastavlja-vojske-crne-gore-i-nato-ne-mogu-da-zauzmu-2020-10-19\"><strong><span style=\"color: #2d5c88;\" class=\"ugb-highlight\">Srbija danas<\/span><\/strong><\/a>), (VIDEO) TOUGH WAR FOR SINJAJEVINA, PEOPLE STOPPED THE ARMY OF MONTENEGRO AND NATO FROM TAKING OVER THE MOUNTAIN! The battle is not over, can the people handle it?! (<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/informer.rs\/svet\/balkan\/557107\/video-zestok-rat-sinjajevinu-narodne-straze-sprecile-vojsku-crne-gore-nato-zauzmu-planinu-bitka-nije-zavrsena-moze-narod-izdrzati\"><em><strong><span style=\"color: #2d5c88;\" class=\"ugb-highlight\">Informer<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/a><em>), GUSLE AGAINST CANONS! Montenegrins on -3 \u00b0C are waiting for the Army on Sinjajevina! (VIDEO) (<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/informer.rs\/svet\/balkan\/556937\/guslama-protiv-topova-crnogorci-minus-stepena-cekaju-vojsku-sinjajevini-video\"><em><strong><span style=\"color: #2d5c88;\" class=\"ugb-highlight\">Informer<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/a><em>).<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In order to awake the widest public circle to the happenings on Sinjajevina, the Serbian tabloids did not run away from sappy tones in order to arouse the feelings of the readers. Therefore, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alo.rs\/vesti\/region\/alo-sinjajevina-vojna-vezba\/350170\/vest\"><strong><span style=\"color: #2d5c88;\" class=\"ugb-highlight\">text<\/span><\/strong><\/a> about <em>father Raso<\/em> who was wishing his daughter happy birthday with tears in his eyes and saying that he was <em>ready to die for his mountain<\/em> appeared on the news portal <em>Alo<\/em>. Another example is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.novosti.rs\/crna-gora\/vesti\/927427\/decak-brani-svoju-planinu-malisan-sinjajevini-pripravnosti-ceka-nato-vojnike-foto\"><strong><span style=\"color: #2d5c88;\" class=\"ugb-highlight\">headline<\/span><\/strong><\/a> on the news portal <em>Vecernje novosti<\/em>: <em>A BOY IS DEFENDING HIS MOUNTAIN: A young fellow on Sinjajevina is readily waiting for NATO soldiers (FOTO)<\/em>, created by the same model \u2013 to deepen the emotions<em>.<\/em> Both news pieces were initially published by the Facebook <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/watch\/sacuvajmosinjajevinu\/\"><strong><span style=\"color: #2d5c88;\" class=\"ugb-highlight\">page<\/span><\/strong><\/a> Sa\u010duvajmo Sinjajevinu\/\u0421\u0430\u0447\u0443\u0432\u0430\u0458\u043c\u043e \u0421\u0438\u045a\u0430\u0458\u0435\u0432\u0438\u043d\u0443.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/dfcme.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Kolaz-naslovi.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1030\" height=\"700\" src=\"https:\/\/dfcme.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Kolaz-naslovi-1030x700.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-9486\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dfc.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Kolaz-naslovi-1030x700.jpg 1030w, https:\/\/dfc.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Kolaz-naslovi-300x204.jpg 300w, https:\/\/dfc.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Kolaz-naslovi.jpg 1425w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1030px) 100vw, 1030px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Striving to display the images of disorder and chaos, the Serbian media did not miss the opportunity to present the NATO alliance as a destructive organization, and to discredit Montenegro as its member state. The drama and visible raise of tensions were accomplished with clickbait headlines: <em>THE OVERTHROW IN NATO BEGAN! Montenegrins launched the rebellion against the Western alliance: Take that radar to your own cottage and watch your chief Stoltenberg! (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.alo.rs\/vesti\/region\/crnogorci-podigli-ustanak-protiv-zapadne-alijanse-nosi-taj-radar-na-svoju-kolibu-pa-gledaj-u-sefa-stoltenberga\/349768\/vest\"><strong><span style=\"color: #2d5c88;\" class=\"ugb-highlight\">Alo<\/span><\/strong><\/a>)<\/em> or <em>Where NATO sets up its bases, the land reeks of pertness: Montenegrins got out their lethal weapon \/video\/ (<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/rs-lat.sputniknews.com\/regioni\/202010191123614917-dje-nato-instalira-baze-fukarlukom-zemlja-zaudara-crnogorci-isukali-ubojito-oruzje-video\/\"><em><strong><span style=\"color: #2d5c88;\" class=\"ugb-highlight\">Sputnik Srbija<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/a><em>).<\/em> In comparison to the other media outlets, the text from <em>Sputnik<\/em> generated 826 interactions in total on Facebook.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After the exercise had been postponed, the following headlines appeared: <em>THE PEOPLE DEFENDED SINJAJEVINA, THE ARMY OF MONTENEGRO GAVE UP ON THE EXERCISE! (<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/informer.rs\/svet\/balkan\/557463\/narodne-straze-odbranile-sinjajevinu-vojska-crne-gore-odustala-vezbe\"><em><strong><span style=\"color: #2d5c88;\" class=\"ugb-highlight\">Informer<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/a><em>)<\/em> and <em>MONTENEGRIN ARMY BEATEN TO A PULP! Great victory over the NATO forces on Sinjajevina! (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.alo.rs\/vesti\/region\/velika-pobeda-nad-nato-snagama-na-sinjajevini\/350275\/vest\"><strong><span style=\"color: #2d5c88;\" class=\"ugb-highlight\">Alo<\/span><\/strong><\/a>).<\/em> However, Minister Boskovic appeared on the RTCG news on October 19 and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rtcg.me\/vijesti\/drustvo\/296530\/sinjajevini-vise-stete-protesti-nego-vojska.html\"><strong><span style=\"color: #2d5c88;\" class=\"ugb-highlight\">said<\/span><\/strong><\/a> that the exercise of the Army of Montenegro was scheduled at the beginning of the year and was on the agenda of the Ministry. He added that the Army of Montenegro was planning to organize the exercise on Sinjajevina with NATO member states in January and February of the following year.<\/p>\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"montenegrin-media-and-meme-pages-name-calling-and-insults\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ffffff;background-color: #2d5c88\" class=\"ugb-highlight\">Montenegrin media and meme pages \u2013 name-calling and insults<\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n<p>The Montenegrin news portal <em>Aktuelno<\/em> jumped into the race for the most striking content with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aktuelno.me\/crna-gora\/vijesti-drustvo\/senlucenje-albanskog-cetnika-i-svetosavske-hipi-komune-nad-sinjajevinom-ziva-vatra-seva-da-vidimo-kog-ekologa-nema\/\"><strong><span style=\"color: #2d5c88;\" class=\"ugb-highlight\">headline<\/span><\/strong><\/a>: <em>Feasting of \u201ethe Albanian Chetnik\u201c and the hippy commune of Saint Sava: A blazing fire is flaring above Sinjajevina, let us see which \u201eecologist\u201c is gone <\/em>(author\u2019s comment: the reference to a Chetnik song)<em>. <\/em>The expressed dissatisfaction of the ecological activists, cattlemen, and NGOs with the military exercise was described by the author as a protest <em>which overnight turned to a paramilitary, subversive action that includes political, para political, intelligence, and propaganda structures of the local political forces but also those from the neighboring countries.<\/em> When the leader of the Civic Movement URA Dritan Abazovic supported the activists, the author changed direction. Therefore, the author writes that <em>under the influence of the environmentally-conscious \u201eAlbanian Chetnik\u201c, the hippy commune of the procession participants on Sinjajevina adapted to the new circumstances and \u201cretailored\u201d their motto&nbsp; \u201eWe don\u2019t give you the shrines\u201c to \u201eWe don\u2019t give you Sinjajevina\u201c.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The fact is that the Serbian news portals lead in a campaign of presenting Sinjajevina as a battlefield in Montenegro. However, the Montenegrin meme pages on Facebook <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/102530094632544\/posts\/209467703938782\"><strong><span style=\"color: #2d5c88;\" class=\"ugb-highlight\">are leading<\/span><\/strong><\/a> the campaign against the NATO alliance and Montenegro as its member state. Even though the content of the meme pages should not be taken too seriously (since they declare themselves as pages for jokes and fun only), they often serve as the <em>cover <\/em>for open campaigns and advocating for particular ideas.<\/p>\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"stoltenberg-protect-nature-but-also-enable-the-army-to-perform-exercises\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ffffff;background-color: #2d5c88\" class=\"ugb-highlight\">Stoltenberg: Protect nature, but also enable the Army to perform exercises<\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n<p>Responding to the question of whether the nature park could be the site for military exercises, NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg <a href=\"https:\/\/ascg.us19.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=4041faf0946392a999a66aafa&amp;id=9fba90359c&amp;e=d9b18ec499\"><strong><span style=\"color: #2d5c88;\" class=\"ugb-highlight\">said<\/span><\/strong><\/a> that he did not want to comment on the specific locations for exercises in Montenegro, but emphasized that the balance must be found between the need to preserve nature and to perform military exercises. <em>This is important for all allies and countries so that their army would be able to protect them<\/em>, he said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A planned five-day exercise on Sinjajevina Mountain that was envisaged for the period from October 19 to October 23 was followed by sensational and tendentious content in the Serbian tabloids.
